“Why Ceramics?”
For me, ceramics in all forms is way to freely express thoughts, feelings, and ideas. Working with the tactile nature of clay invites a strong connection between my body and mind. Working in the realm of 3D art enables me to fully realize a world that only I can imagine, transforming each abstract idea into a tangible piece of art that invites curiosity. Each piece I make reflects my personal journey as an artist but also as a human. Clay is meditative, flexible and what I consider to be the “fool” of the 3D world as it has boundless potential with an often unexpected outcome.
Mission Statement: My art lives in the space between use and avoidance. I create ceramic pieces that technically work as functional pieces, yet interactions with the pieces leave the viewer/holder with a certain unease. Through the tension created, I try and explore the psychology of design and the limits of comfort in everyday objects. Though rooted in the aesthetic of science fiction and fantasy, my work focuses on transforming unease into curiosity. I hope to create work that helps viewers become comfortable with discomfort and find beauty in ideas that often seem alien to the common man.
Statement: In our day-to-day, we can only observe the front put up by the rest of the world. During my practice, I’ve come to enjoy taking that experience and trying to capture the essence of it’s hidden meanings and emotions.
Sometimes I don’t even understand the reason for what I make, I just know I must use it to communicate my being. Hoping others can resonate with my work as well.
Vision Statement/Goals: The goal of my practice is to challenge the conventional ideas of functionality and aesthetic values by pushing functional design into the realm of critical art; using objects as a way to communicate the ideas of fear, anxiety, and the emotional implications of use.
